Time and again, as I’ve spoken with endoscopists across the country, when the topic of scope performance comes up, more and more, each one talks to me about scope retroflexion. They tell me what a game-changer retroflexion is to their practice, to the procedures they perform, and their ability to effectively treat their patients.

Having worked in endoscopy for more than 20 years, I suppose I’ve taken this aspect of scope performance for granted. Why wouldn’t an endoscope perform this basic function reliably and consistently over time? It would seem scope retroflexion performance is obvious — I’ve learned it is anything but.

With the advancements being made in therapeutic capabilities and the increased focus on ergonomic scope design due to high rates associated with physician injury in endoscopy, the ability to perform endoscopy in retroflexion is of critical importance, and the topic is gaining in awareness and conversation.

In this series, I’ll share important insights about scope retroflexion including comments — and participation — from your GI peers and leading experts.
